Wriggly worms

On Thursday 26th March, KS2 pupils in the gardening club had the fantastic opportunity to work with a worm expert, Katy. What did they find out?

After digging to locate some worms, we used branching databases to identify which ones they were. We recorded this information in charts, so that our worm expert and Sarah could find out what types of worms we had in the HOP garden.

FASCINATING FACT!
Did you know that worms are both male and female?

We also did some soil testing.

FASCINATING FACT!
Soil can fizz.

First, we poured some vinegar on soil and listened to hear if it was fizzing. If soil fizzes, then this tells you that there is calcium carbonate in the soil.

Second, we used a pH tester to identify what the pH of the soil was.

All of this information helps to tell gardeners how they can improve their soil and the growing conditions for the plants.
